Three women inducted into the 2008 Hall of Fame

Three women were inducted into the Okaloosa County Women’s Hall of Fame at a special reception on Tuesday, August 26th at the Niceville Community Center. The event was sponsored by the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women (OCCSW) and held in conjunction with Women’s Equality Day. The Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes and honors women who through their lives and efforts make significant contributions and quality-of-life improvements.

The OCCSW received a total of eight nominations this year. The nominees were: Nellie Bogar, Elsie B. Garrett, Mitzi Prince Henley, Champee Kemp, Mary Ida O’Daniels, Linda Powell Parker, Joyce Sanders, and 
Joyce Shanahan.

Thirteen Women Added to the Wall of Honor
Thirteen women were honored in a ceremony on May 6, 2008 with a dedication of each by placing their names on a plaque on the Okaloosa County Women’s Wall of Honor. The Wall is located in the library at the Fort Walton Beach campus of the University of West Florida. Also on display in the library at the Wall is a book containing a Biographical page for each woman. 

This year’s honorees are: Dr. Diane Kelley, Levada Meredith, Shirley Daniel, Kathy Foster, Doris E. Stone, Pam White, Anna Peele, Phyllis Wade, Marilue Mitchell Maris, Mitzi Prince Henley, Carol White, Dee Taylor, and Myra Arnold.  Click here to view their biographies and photos.

Friends, family and co-workers nominated the women for the honor by citing contributions to the community, family, church, etc. The Wall of Honor was established by the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Woman in partnership with the University of West Florida. Nominations are taken once a year and there is a $100 application fee. Click here for details.
