Doris Berg - Contemporary Award
Doris Berg - Who is best known for her work with Shelter House, Transition House, Sharing and Caring and the Okaloosa Medical Assistance Clinic. She was the 1996 Contemporary Inductee.
Margaret Gebauer - Pioneer Award
Margaret Gebauer - She was foster parent to over 30 children from 1932-49; taught "Learning to Hear With Your Eyes" and created 16 devices for the hearing-impaired; worked for the Council on Aging; founded the Okaloosa Regional Bookmobile Service and kept it running for over 40 years; and promoted the "Just Say No" drug program. She was a 91 year old activist at the time of her induction as a pioneer in 1996.
Alice Starkey - Pioneer Award
Alice Starkey - She founded the Alice Starkey Day Care Center, the first all-day program for pre-school children in the early 1960s. She also developed the first state subsidized childcare service in Northwest Florida with centers in Niceville, Crestview and Fort Walton Beach. Alice directed the Okaloosa County Day Care Program and served with the county and state Associations of Children Under Six. Was inducted posthumously as a pioneer in 1996.
